Close Finishes, Player of the Week Honors Highlight Detroit Mercy's Run
Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse has won three straight after a 14-13 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 19.
Close Finishes
The game ended in dramatic fashion. With just inside of four minutes to go, Mercyhurst asked for a stick check on Titans FOGO Canton Lanham. They were awarded a three minute non-releasable on Lanham, and would score twice to tie the game at 13. With less than a minute remaining, Chase Mahabir played the hero - splitting a double team out of a timeout and burying his fifth goal of the night.
The win over the Lakers marks the second time the Titans have pulled out a one goal win during this three game winning streak. The first was an overtime win over VMI.
The streak puts Detroit Mercy at 3-3 in NEC play with a final game upcoming against Cleveland State.
Player of the Week
In the past month, redshirt-freshman Marcus Thundercloud has won NEC Rookie of the Week three times.
Chase Mahabir has scored 11 times in his last two games, being named Player of the Week both times.
Lanham Leading the Charge
Canton Lanham has been fantastic for the Titans on face-offs, going 61% over his last 5 games. For the season, Lanham is now over 52%. During the three game winning streak, Lanham is winning 15 face-offs per game, including a season-high 19 on Saturday vs Mercyhurst.
What This Means
Whether the Titans make the NEC tournament this season or not, this has turned out to be a solid first year under first time head coach Charlie Hayes. The Titans have played a number of freshman and other underclassmen, and they have stepped into some big roles.
The offense took a bit to get going, but they have averaged 10.6 goals per game over their last 5. During the winning streak that number is up to 13 goals per game.
The defense has been one of the best in the nation when it comes to caused turnovers. The Titans rank 17th nationally at 9.3 caused turnovers per game. Junior defender Kyle Grant is 6th in the nation with 2.1 caused per game - ahead of notable names like projected first round PLL draft pick Levi Verch.
Defensive-midfielders Gavin Moore and Lance Poole are sophomores this spring, and freshman defender Ian Greenwell has started nine of 10 games this year. Seniors Sean Henige and Eoghan Mullett could return in 2026 after not seeing action back in 2022. Goalie Ryan Richters could be in a similar position after playing at the college club level for two years prior to coming to the Titans in 2024.
