Titans Look To Build Off Of 2024 Championship Appearance in 2025
The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team looks to build off of the 2024 season which found the Titans in the MAC Title game.
The championship game appearance came in the Titans' first ever time in the MAC tournament field which began in 2022. Detroit Mercy entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and knocked off the No. 1 seed and host Central Michigan.
Fist year head coach Alexa Matta had an interesting start to her tenure, originally being hired in the summer of 2024 as an assistant coach on then head coach Maddie Dugan's staff. Dugan would later take the head position at Eastern Michigan, allowing Matta to fill the Titans' vacancy prior to fall ball beginning.
Matta joined the Taking The Field With Stevie Mac podcast hosted by Steven MacDonald and described the 2025 Titans as "hungry" after their taste of success in 2024.
Detroit Mercy returns quite a bit of production from last year's squad. On the defensive end, notable returners include 2025 captain Sophie Davis and Goalkeeper Meredith Leavell. Leavell finished third in the MAC in saves per game (10.39) and save percentage (.468) in 2024. Nationally, Leavell was eighth in saves per game, 21st in save percentage, and fourth in total saves.
The midfield features a trio of two-way players in Maddy Camm, Leah Bodnar, and Alyssa Jarvis. Camm was fifth in the conference for ground balls per game, ninth in draw controls per game, and first in caused turnovers per game a season ago. Bodnar was top-10 in goals per game and points per game while Jarvis finished 2024 fourth in draw controls per game.
The biggest loss for the Titans is Cat Kopchia who ranked first in the MAC for goals (62), second in points per game (3.89), and second in shots per game (7.72). However, Matta told MacDonald that junior attacker Libby Cuckler has taken on a bigger role within the offense. Cuckler tallied 11 goals and 12 assists in 18 games as a sophomore.
The Titans open the 2025 season against San Diego State on Feb. 7 from the UWM Sports Complex in Pontiac.
