Premier Lacrosse Draft Recap

Image
The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) draft was held on Tuesday, May 6 with the Philadelphia Waterdogs holding the No. 1 pick.  The Waterdogs - to absolutely no one's surprise - took Cornell's CJ Kirst with the first pick.  I think many of the teams had a solid night on draft night. There were also some surprises. Let's break it down. Who did Well First, I think the California Redwoods nailed their first three picks. Granted it's hard to mess up having three top-10 picks. The fact that they got Chris Kavanagh at No. 10 while also getting Andrew McAdorey and Sam English was an A+ job.  I like the Atlas building through the midfield with this draft. That was a strategy that former head coach Ben Rubeor loved. Getting Matt Traynor at No. 8 was probably a dream scenario for Mike Pressler, and then he added Max Krevsky out of Yale in the second round. I also love the value of taking Hugh Kelleher in the fourth round. There are some concerns he will choose football, but Pressler ...

Premier Lacrosse League College Draft Preview

Image
The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) College Draft is Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. eastern.  There have been several mock drafts thrown around in the last few weeks from various beat writers and insiders. There seems to be a consensus on who the first round players will be - it's just a matter of order. However, there could be some surprises on the horizon just like we saw with the NFL draft. Several notable names in the NFL Draft projected to go in the first round found themselves waiting until day two or - in Shedeur Sanders' case - day three. So it makes me think; what kind of surprises could we see with the PLL Draft? Possible Redwoods Trade? I reached out to California Redwoods beat writer (and guest of the podcast) Phil Shore and asked him about a possible Redwoods draft day trade. "I can see them packaging picks or trading down for this year or next," Shore answered. To this point, I would say the better option for the Redwoods would be to package the fourth rounders ...

Titans Women's Lacrosse In Familiar Position

Image
Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse is no stranger to needing a win in the regular-season finale to make the MAC tournament.  In 2024 the Titans were the tournament's No. 4 seed after knocking off Kent State (?) in the regular-season finale. Detroit Mercy would finish the conference slate 3-3 overall. In 2025, they sit 2-3 after dropping their last three games.  In two of the three losses, slow starts killed the Titans. They quickly fell behind 6-1 against Eastern Michigan and trailed Youngstown State 9-1 at one point last week.  I spoke to head coach Alexa Matta after the Eastern Michigan loss. She said when they went back and watched film on the game, the offense was not what they had installed that week during practice.  On the defensive side, it feels like Detroit Mercy has just lost their focus at that end of the field; surrendering 13, 19, and 19 goals during the three game skid.   Despite all of that, the Titans - with a win on Sunday against Central Mich...

Close Finishes, Player of the Week Honors Highlight Detroit Mercy's Run

Image
Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse has won three straight after a 14-13 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 19.  Close Finishes The game ended in dramatic fashion. With just inside of four minutes to go, Mercyhurst asked for a stick check on Titans FOGO Canton Lanham. They were awarded a three minute non-releasable on Lanham, and would score twice to tie the game at 13. With less than a minute remaining, Chase Mahabir played the hero - splitting a double team out of a timeout and burying his fifth goal of the night. The win over the Lakers marks the second time the Titans have pulled out a one goal win during this three game winning streak. The first was an overtime win over VMI.  The streak puts Detroit Mercy at 3-3 in NEC play with a final game upcoming against Cleveland State.  Player of the Week In the past month, redshirt-freshman Marcus Thundercloud has won NEC Rookie of the Week three times.  Chase Mahabir has scored 11 times in his last two games, being named Pl...

Titans Finding Their Groove Late In Season

Image
The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team has won back-to-back games in NEC play after defeating Wagner 15-11 at home on Saturday.  The 15 goals scored is a season-high; topping 11 goals scored vs Hampton and 10 goals against VMI. Over their last four games, the Titans offense - under first year coordinator Zach Palmer - is averaging 9.75 goals per game. Prior to that stretch, the offense was averaging just 5.8 goals per game across five games. Chase Mahabir tallied six goals and one assist on the afternoon. He earned NEC Player of the Week honors for his efforts. Head coach Charlie Hayes talked about Mahabir after the game calling him fast and physical. Hayes said that teams often try to put a long pole on Mahabir. However, Mahabir was able to find himself in some match-ups on a short stick, like the play below.   Andrew Parker scored three times for the Titans, and all three showed off some impressive range.  Coach Hayes said post-game that he's really ha...

Detroit Mercy vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

The Detroit Mercy Titans (5-5, 2-0 MAC) head to Ypsilanti, MI. on Sunday for a date with Eastern Michigan (5-6, 1-2 MAC).  Last Time Out Detroit Mercy knocked off Akron 10-8 at Titan Field on March 30. Attacker Libby Cuckler had one goal and three assists in the win while Midfielder Alyssa Jarvis led the way with a career-high five goals. In the cage, Meredith Leavell tallied nine saves - surpassing the 500 mark for her career.  The Eagles fell to Central Michigan on March 30 by a 10-9 final. Both of the Eagles losses in conference play have been by just one goal. In both games, EMU held a lead in the fourth quarter. Midfielder Mackenzie Blackwell scored four goals in the loss.   Eastern Michigan faced Michigan on Wednesday, April 2. They were led by Mackenzie Blackwell with three goals in a 17-5 loss.  Scouting the Eagles The Eagles came into 2025 returning eight of their top nine offensive producers. Mackenzie Blackwell leads the team with 37 goals which also ...

Taking The Field With Stevie Mac - Episode 128 - The Highlights

Image
On the latest episode of Taking The Field With Stevie Mac , I spent a segment of the show talking about something I was asked during the Eastern Michigan vs Youngstown State lacrosse broadcast.  Eagles ESPN+ broadcaster Tom Helmer asked me for my thoughts on women's lacrosse players eventually wearing pads.  First, EMU head coach - and guest of the show - Maddie Dugan told Helmer before the game, "I hope it never comes to that." In short, I completely agree. As I stated in the episode, there is something beautiful about every form of lacrosse - whether it be the men's game, women's game, box, or sixes. I went on to say,  “This version of where we are at with the women’s game right now is probably the best version we’re ever going to get without taking it to an extreme…” Other Things You Might Have Missed I later talked about the Mid American Conference women's lacrosse. The MAC has largely been dominated by the likes of Central Michigan and Robert Morris. Howe...
